Advice on Buying Garden Furniture

There are three main types of garden furniture on the market; synthetic resins, metal and wood. The following information will help you see the advantages and disadvantages of them all and come to a conlusion of which is right for you before you buy.

Synthetic resin furniture This type of furniture is very popular as it is very cheap to buy. It offers reasonable durability and with the addition of cushions can be quite comfortable. They are best set on solid surfaces like a patio as they are less rigid than metal and wood types and can be a bit wobbly on the lawn! There is quite an array of products available such as chairs, recliners, side tables and long chairs, most of which are foldable or stackable, ideal for storage.

Without cushions they are perfect for around the pool and simply wipe clean. There are however a great deal of cushions on the market which are easily removed and stored. Go for a non porous glossy finish, this will wear better. When cleaning, use resin cleaners instead of your usual kitchen or bathroom cleaners. Also if you apply a resin furniture wax at the beginning and middle of each season your furniture should stay in better condition for longer.

Metal furniture Metal furniture offers better durability and comfort than resin furniture. There are two main types of metal furniture; tubular and cast iron.

Tubular metal furniture is very popular and is made mainly from aluminium or treated metal tubes, thus making it very light and pretty affordable. Typically this furniture is stackable and sometimes foldable for that ease of storage. Being made of aluminium or treated metal (be aware that all metals used are treated) make them very corrosion resistant.

Cast iron furniture is seen at the top end of the market and has a price tag to match. Its rather beautiful and often very detailed. It can be very heavy even though its actually more fragile than tubular models and is not designed to be foldable or stackable so will need more storage space.

Wood furniture Made of cedar, mahogany, teak or other exotic species, wood furniture would almost always be a focal point of your garden. However, it may look fantastic when you first buy it but if you dont maintain it properly it can look very old before its time, which makes them a less popular choice. To protect your wood furniture you would need to apply regular applications of teak oil, stain or varnish. To increase their durability, look for furniture with brass or stainless steel fittings.

No matter which furniture you decide to go for always make sure that you store it away in the winter months to save you buying a new set the following year!
