Tips For Buying a Pencil Skirt

The pencil skirt is one of the must haves for Fall, and the perfect wardrobe basic. You can dress it up or down depending on what you wear with it. Go casual by pairing it with a button-down shirt and pair of flats. For a professional look, appropriate for business meetings or even an interview, simply add a matching blazer and a classic black heel. You can even dress up your skirt for an evening out by wearing a trendy blouse, strappy sandals, and accessories.

Because you can get so many different looks from your pencil skirt, it is worth investing a little money in a well-made garment. But remember, high prices do not always equal good quality.

To be sure that you are buying a well-made Pencil Skirt (or any basic wardrobe staple), you should check the following qualities:

Fabric: The quality of the fabric is so important. In order for your skirt to stand the test of time, you will want to make sure you purchase a durable fabric. If the fabric feels thin, it probably won't last very long. On the other hand, a very thick or bulky fabric likely won't hang well. If you are looking for a skirt you can wear year-round, wool is the way to go; it is a durable fabric that breathes well.

Color Saturation: The color saturation is as important as the fabric quality. If you are buying a black or dark navy skirt, make sure it is a "true" black or navy and doesn't have a faded look to it. Be aware that the lighting in stores doesn't always accurately portray the color. If you can, take the skirt to the window and see how it looks in the sunlight. You can also compare it to another piece of clothing similar in color to see how they look together.

Seams & Stitching: Check the seams to make sure they are finished and there are no raw edges. The stitches should be straight and sit tightly against the fabric. Also, inspect the quality of the thread for fraying or raveling. Poor stitching will limit the life of your garment as it will not be able to withstand frequent washings. Also inspect the zipper to see if it is sewn in securely and it slides up and down smoothly with little effort.

If you don't have much experience shopping or are not sure how to pick out a quality-made garment, you can always go into a high-end store to look at the clothing they offer. You don't have to buy anything at the store, just shop around and look at all the different fabrics. You should even try on a few pencil skirts so you can get an idea for how a well-made skirt should fit. Who knows, you might get lucky - they may be having a clearance sale and offering discount prices on items that you normally could not afford.
