The MyChron 4 is way more than a dash for your kart showing you laptimes. It is the heart of the most versatile kart data acquisition equipment available! If you already have the MyChron 4 dash you simply must buy the GPS module and transform a laptimer into a state of the art data acquisition system.
If you are wondering why bother, I'll put it very simple terms - the information from the Mychron 4 with GPS is all you need to know to win kart races at the highest level. That's why the man who qualified on pole for the World Karting Championship finals uses it Arnaud Kozlinski, and multiple world champion Davide Fore. For the eagle eyed karters out there, if you spot the GPS antenna on the nassau panel of the kart, you can see they are using Mychron 4 with GPS.
Once you have fitted the GPS system to your Mychron 4 (a 5 minute job) the system is ready to go. The GPS will provide you with a highly accurate speed trace which is far better than traditional wheel speed sensors and doesn't require calibration. It also gives a reading for g force which reveals how much grip the tyres are providing. Now I could easily get very technical but I would risk boring those of you who just want to go faster. So I'll tell you the basics of how the system will very quickly show you how to make up time.
The Mychron 4 comes with free software (YouTube tutorials for Race Studio 2) that has a very clever and easy to understand feature called time compare. This is just a couple of lines that show you how well your current lap is going compared to your best lap so far. The reason this is so cool is that it reveals to you the times where you were actually going quicker than your fastest lap on a particular section of track. All you need to do then is use the speed trace and GPS racing lines map to figure out why you were going faster.
If you can figure that out, it's then up to you to go out on track and actually do it. Very often when you use the Mychron 4 like this, you will find small gems in your data where you went really quickly through one corner and were half a second faster. Normally you would never have even noticed, but now you will have that information, and with a bit of investigation you will start to discover secrets to breaking lap records!
Steps to Getting Better Lap Times Using Mychron 4
1. Select a lap closest to the fastest lap time to make a comparison
2. Study the time compare line to see where the slower lap trace has a downward slope. This reveals where you were catching the fastest lap up, or going ahead of the fastest lap
3. When you locate a down slope place the cursor on it. This will show the location of that point on the track map, and you can view the corresponding point on the speed trace also.
4. Study the speed trace to see if you were catching because of braking later, braking earlier and getting a faster exit, or if you carried better apex speed.
5. If the speed trace doesn't help call up the GPS racing line and see if you took a different line
This process will reveal how you made up that extra time revealed by the time compare and you will now be able to go out on track and find that time for real.
